Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - CALIFORNIA]. Photo album documenting the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906.

7 1/4 x 10 3/4 in. album containing 56 photographs, most approx. 4 5/8 x 6 5/8 in., or smaller, mounted recto on 7 x 10 in. album pages. Most with manuscript captions on album pages below images. Most are uncredited with the exception of individual photos credited to AL. Murat, Pillsbury Picture Co., and Jas. Cave.

The photograph album records the aftermath of the great earthquake and fire that struck San Francisco on 18 April 1906, destroying much of the city. Featured are captivating images of devastation caused by the earthquake and fire.

Highlighted scenes include: City Hall Ruins, Morning of April 18, 1906. -- Observatory Hill, Strawberry Hill, Golden Gate Park. -- St. Luke's Church, Cor. Clay and Van Ness Ave. -- Horses killed by falling debris, Clay St. Market. -- St. Dominics Church. -- The 300 Block Golden Gate Ave. -- The Statue Agassiz, Stanford University, Palo Alto, Cal. With additional notation above image, which reads in part, "This statue fell a distance of about 50 ft. crashed through the cement side walk and when taken out it was practically un-injured, only a small piece of the ear having been broken off. This now replaced in in its former position." -- The interior of the chapel, Sanford University, Palo Alto, Cl. -- The burning of the city as seen from Russian Hill. -- The city burning at night as seen from Alta Park. -- Burning of the call building. -- Union Square Park before it burnt. -- Refugees at Jefferson Square. -- Refugees trying to save their household affects, with additional note, "later all was destroyed by fire." -- The poor and rich alike camping out in the sand hills. -- The U.S. Mint, not damaged by quake nor destroyed by fire. -- Ruins in the whole sale district. -- The ruins from Nob Hill. -- Cattle killed by falling debris, Union Iron block on Mission St. -- Society camping in Golden Gate Park. -- Refugees at dinner, Golden Gate Park. -- Opening safes in the business district. -- The bread line at St. Mary's Church, Van Ness Ave. -- And many others.
