Lot Description

[WESTERN AMERICANA]. Souvenir album feat. photographs of Kodiak, Alaska, incl. military subjects.

8 1/2 x 11 1/4 in. album bound with string, front cover with "Photographs / Alaska" and rendering of a sled dog team identified as the "Malamute Limited." With three "Memory Leaves" inserted in the front of the album, including the names and addresses of individuals from California, New York, and New Hampshire. The remaining album contains approx. 107 silver gelatin photographs ranging in size from 2 x 3 in. to 5 x 7 in., displayed in corner mounts, recto/verso, on album pages. The album contains a combination of formal photos and informal snapshots, many showing soldiers in uniform, as well as wildlife, landscapes, and city scenes taken primarily in Kodiak, Alaska. A composite image of officers of the 79th USNCB stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, in 1943, indicates that this album may have belonged to one of those officers.

Additional images of note include: Multiple views of stuffed Kodiak bears. -- Wright Whale taken at Port Hobron, Alaska. -- Various Kodiak businesses and establishments, including the bank, hospital, fire hall, and Totem Igloo Curio Gift Shop. -- Multiple views of the Russian Church in Kodiak, among other houses of worship. -- Public school of Kodiak. -- Fishing scenes. -- Kodiak Harbor, Womens Bay in the distance. -- Men, possibly soldiers, playing baseball. -- Men digging what appears to be a pipeline. -- And others.
