Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Early 20th century Indian Territory photo album and related documentation.


Approx. 8 1/2 x 6 1/4 in. album (heavy wear, completely separated at spine, all leaves loose), 18 leaves with 124 photographs in varying sizes ranging from approx. 6 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. to 1 x 1 in. Various locations, incl. Indian Territory, ca 1903-1910. Provenance: Consignor relates that the original owner of the album was her stepfather's father, James Isaac Miller (1887 - ca 1962), and that he is the man dressed as a cowboy in two photographs on the first leaf of the album, which may have been taken by his friend J.F. Standiford, one of the first photographers to operate in Muskogee, Indian Territory.

Album predominantly contains vernacular photographs, with snapshots of family, friends, home life, leisure activities, pets, and more. Most images are not identified, however, identified images include photographs of Native Americans from the Muskogee Creek Nation: two photographs "Taken at Okmulgee I.T. 1901" with one identified as "Chief [Pleasant] Porter"; "Creek Capitol"; "Freedman"; "Enrolling Indians at Okmulgee"; "The Creek house of Kings voting on the Treaty of 1901"; and "Indian Squaws."

[With:] PORTER, Chief Pleasant (1840-1907). Partly-printed land patent of the Muskogee (Creek ) Natian, Indian Territory, to Julius Miller, signed ("P. Porter") as Principal Chief of the Muskogee (Creek) Nation. 5 October 1901. 1p, 8 1/2 x 14 in. With embossed "Great Seal of the Muscogee Nation I.T." at bottom left.

[Also with:] Group of approx. 25 documents, comprising: documents related to multiple generations of the Miller family, spanning approx. 1850s - early 1900s, including an appointment for Julius M. Miller, as Attorney and Counselor at Law in Indian Territory, January 1893. -- Deeds from Indian Territory and early Oklahoma statehood, including Warranty Deeds, Quitclaim Deeds, and a Sheriff's Deed for foreclosure.

[Also with:] Additional images: 5 loose paper photographs, a real photo postcard of men in an early automobile, and an approx. 8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. tintype of a large home with four women posed in front.
