Lot Description
[ARTISTS]. Group portrait of artists incl. Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi
posed as the Statue of Liberty. Paris: Banque & Co., ca 1880s.
posed as the Statue of Liberty. Paris: Banque & Co., ca 1880s.
11 3/8 x 9 1/8 in. albumen photograph on 14 7/8 x 11 1/4 in. cardstock mount. Benque & Co.'s imprint on mount recto. Verso bears penciled inscriptions including "Julian Academy 1883" and a list of artists, some of whom could be subjects featured in the photograph but others of whom seem unlikely based on their ages at the time this image was captured. List includes names such as J. Laurens, H. Rousseau, P. Renoir, H. Matisse, and M. Cassatt. Some children are also included in the portrait.
Notably, artist Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (whose name does not appear on the inscribed list), designer of the Statue of Liberty, appears in the back row, posed standing with one arm held aloft, grasping some kind of ornate candlestick, lamp, or vase in his hand, likely to imitate Lady Liberty holding the torch.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
