Lot Description

[STEAMSHIPS]. 5 stereoviews of the SS Great Eastern.

5 stereoviews featuring the iron-hulled steam ship, Great Eastern. Includes: 2 views of the ship out at sea as viewed from a distance. One bears paper label affixed to verso with printed caption "The 'Great Eastern' in Southampton Water," and photo credit to G. W. Wilson, Aberdeen. The other uncredited but with ink inscription to verso identifying the ship. -- A view of Captain William Harrison, commander of the Great Eastern, who drowned in Southampton waters in 1860. "The London Stereoscope Co" embossed on mount recto. Verso with printed seal reading "The Great Eastern in the Stereoscope," and caption "The late Captain Harrison." -- A view of the docked ship with numerous people and supplies including lumber gathered at the shipyard. Verso bears affixed paper label with credit to E. & H. T. Anthony & Co. and caption "The Great Eastern. From the foot of Hammond Street." -- And an up-close view of the wheel and chain drum of the ship. Uncredited, though elsewhere attributed to Robert Howlett, ca 1857. -- Together, 5 stereoviews.

The Great Eastern was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by John Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall Iron Works on the River Thames, London, England.
