Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. CDV album containing portraits of American sculptor Clark Mills' family, incl. T. Fisk Mills.
6 x 4 3/4 in. album containing 37 CDVs and CDV-sized tintypes of men, women, and children, some identified on mount recto or verso. CDVs are credited to various photographers, most notably Brady, New York and Washington, Bell & Brother, Washington, DC, De Morat's, Philadelphia, PA, Alexander Gardner, Washington, DC, Charles D. Fredricks & Co., New York, and C.M. Bell, Washington, DC.
While many subjects are unidentified, the album appears to contain some images of the family of noted American sculptor Clark Mills (1815-1883), who is known for equestrian statues of Andrew Jackson and George Washington as well as as a life-cast of Abraham Lincoln's head. Subjects include a portrait after a painting of Mills' father, John Mills, and at least 7 portraits of two of his sons, John (one which appears to be signed) and Theophilus Fisk Mills (one which appears to be signed). Also enclosed is a tintype studio portrait of a man leaning against a wooden fence, with trees painted in the background. Note the owl perched on the branch above his head.
Estate of David O'Reilly, Old Bridge, New Jersey
