Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of CDVs and ephemera identified to American photographer Charles D. Fredericks.

2 standing studio portraits featuring balding men, one more advanced in age than the other. Both tentatively identified as photographer Charles D. Fredericks, though it is unlikely that both feature the photographer. The first shows a bearded man smoking a cigar. Verso bears Fredricks' imprint and ink inscription reading "C. D. Fredricks." The second features an older bearded man with prominent bags under his eyes. Uncredited, previously identified by consignor as Fredricks. -- 9 CDV portraits of people identified as family members of Fredericks including 3 portraits of his wife as a young woman, 3 portraits of his wife as a middle-aged woman, 2 portraits of his children, and one portrait of an older woman simply identified by consignor as a "relative" of Fredricks. Many are credited to Fredricks on mount recto or verso. -- 2 composite CDVs featuring dozens of actresses and other famous women of the day, each identified on verso. One credited to Fredricks in the negative and on mount recto. -- 3 x 1 3/4 in. proof-of-purchase card from C. D. Fredricks & Co., bearing ink inscribed negative number and the word "Paid." Printed instructions advise the holder to retain the card until they receive their order. -- 2 checks from the Manufacturers & Merchants Bank in New York, signed "C. D. Fredricks," including one dated 6 February 1871 and the other dated 21 November 1871.
