Lot Description
[CAMERAS]. Original Kodak Camera, 1888 previously owned by Beaumont Newhall, MOMA's first Director of Photography.
The Kodak Camera, original model (light surface wear throughout). Size 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 x 3 1/4 in. Ca June 1888-1889. Made by Frank Brownell for the Eastman Dry Plate & Film Co., this was the first commercially successful camera to use rollfilm. With wooden box (contemporary), size 9 1/4 x 5 x 5 in.
Provenance: Previously owned by Beaumont Newhall, first Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art and author of World History of Photography 1839-1937, a copy of which is also enclosed. A typed letter of provenance is included from Jaromir "Jerry" Stephany, University of Maryland, Baltimore County photography teacher, attesting to the provenance of the camera and how he acquired it directly from Newhall.
Also included is a copy of The Kodak Primer (1888). -- A Centenary History of The Kodak (1988). -- Kodak photograph on cardstock mount, 5 1/4 x 4 1/4 in. overall.
