Lot Description
An Inlaid and Marquetry Writing Desk
Made by Gunter Magnuson (Danish-American, 19th Century), Circa 1875
in two parts, the upper gallery with detachable arched and domed pediment having central roundel containing printed portrait of Robert Burns (1759-1796) by Alexander Nasmyth (Scottish, 1758-1840), surrounded by deer head, rabbits, and grapevine, over two bowed doors above drawers, flanking central diamond-shaped beveled mirror, the doors and side panels inlaid with birds on grapevines, the lower section with slanted writing surface inlaid with maker's initials, "GM," and emblazoned eagle against American and Danish flag, flanked by depiction of Mercury and Minerva, bordered by Greek Key, above three short drawers, on turned fluted legs.
