A Georgian Gold Mourning Brooch
Dated, "1785"
after a work by Francesco Bartolozzi (Italian, 1727-1815), of navette form, the oval plaque depicting an angel carrying the deceased, with bannerette inscribed, "Of Such Is The Freedom of God", surrounded by border of paste stones, the verso engraved, "Tho's Pares/ Obt. 31st March 1785/ Aet. 2 Years.", lacking pin, housed in leather case, with old ink note transcribing inscription above and additionally inscribed, "By Bartolozzi."
2 x 1 3/8 inches (brooch), 4 x 3 1/4 inches (leather case).
