Lot Description

FREEMAN, Douglas Southall (1886-1953). R.E. Lee: A Biography. New York and London: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934-1935.

4 volumes, 8vo. Original gilt-lettered reddish-orange cloth; glassine (tears with losses); pictorial slipcases (light wear to extremities). Provenance: Samuel M. Frostick (recipient of inscription from the author).

FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY FREEMAN. Following the critical and commercial success of Lee's Dispatches, Douglas Southall Freeman was approached by Charles Scribner's Sons to write an extensive biography of the Civil War general. The resulting work, which attracted criticism for focusing more on the strategies of military campaigns than on the social and political events surrounding the war itself, led to Freeman being labeled a "Lost Cause" historian. Nonetheless, the work was a great success and would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize. A BRIGHT SET, RARE IN ORIGINAL SLIPCASES.

[With:] FREEMAN. Lee's Lieutenants. A Study in Command. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1942-1944. 3 volumes, 8vo. Original gilt-lettered black cloth; dust jackets (light edgewear). Provenance: Walter Sherman Gifford (1885-1966), American businessman and former president of AT&T (recipient of author's inscription). ONE OF 100 ADVANCE READING COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY FREEMAN: "To Walter S. Gifford with highest admiration, Douglas Southall Freeman." Additionally, inscribed: "This is one of 100 advance copies of the first printing of the first edition. D.S.F."

[With:] TWELVE SOUTHERNERS. I'll Take My Stand. The South and the Agrarian Tradition. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1930. Original gilt-stamped green cloth (spine sunned). FIRST EDITION.
