FAULKNER, William (1897-1962). Pylon. New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1935.


8vo. Original two-tone cloth lettered in gilt, top edge stained black (light rubbing to gilt on spine, some spotting to textblock fore-edge); dust jacket (light chipping and rubbing to extremities, spine toned). Provenance: Lawrence Edmunds (recipient of inscription), presumably the Hollywood bookseller who founded Larry Edmunds Bookshop in 1938, and was noted for having famous literary patrons frequent his store, such as William Faulkner; sold, Waverly Auctions, 8 December 1988, lot 258.

FIRST EDITION, TRADE ISSUE. INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER to Lawrence Edmunds on the front free endpaper: "To Lawrence Edmunds, William Faulkner, 12 Dec 1935."

Inscribed copies of Pylon are SCARCE, with only four copies appearing at auction in the last thirty years according to American Book Prices Current (2010, inscribed to Myrtle Ramey; 2001, inscribed to Henry P. Enwin; 1988, this copy; and 1977, inscribed to Malcolm Cowley [Goodwin copy]). Petersen A17.1c.
