Lot Description

JEFFERYS, Thomas (1719-1771). The Natural and civil history of the French dominions in North and South America. London: Printed for Thomas Jefferys, 1760.


2 parts in one, folio (356 x 229 mm). Titles printed in red and black, 18 folding maps and plans. (Light spotting, some offsetting to maps, evidence of bookplate removal on endpapers.) Contemporary English calf, covers ruled twice in gilt (rebacked to style, preserving blanks and endpapers, light surface wear to boards). Provenance: armorial bookplate.

FIRST EDITION. "A monumental geographical work important equally for its text as well as its maps" (Streeter). The first part describes Canada and Louisiana, and France's troubles with the indigenous peoples. The second part provides a close look at the island territories of the French West Indies, including Martinique, Hispaniola, Guadaloupe, and other smaller islands. This issue contains the seldom found seven pages (pp.*129-*142 in part 1 ["The French attempt to retake Quebec"]) and the errata slip on p.80 in part 2 containing the parish names of Guadaloupe and Grande Terre.
