Lot Description
[INDIANA IMPRINT]. The Life of Bonaparte, Late Emperor of the French, From his birth until his departure to the Island of St. Helena by a citizen of the United States. Salem, IN: Patrick & Booth, 1818.
8vo. (Marginal toning, X2 [Appendix] mostly torn away, X3 partially torn with some loss to letters, lacking rear blanks, dampstaining to preliminary blanks.) Contemporary calf (extremities worn with some surface cracking to covers, spine label chipped). Provenance: Ezekiel Wright (ownership signature on title-page dated 1826 and priced "$1.50"; notations on endpapers); William E. Wilson; his sale, Sotheby's, 29 April 1981, lot 154.
FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST LITERARY WORK PRINTED IN INDIANA. It was pirated from either the Philadelphia edition, published by W. Dobson in 1816, or the Warren, Ohio, edition, published by James White in the same year. The only difference among the three editions is the absence of the word "Napoleon" in the title of the Indiana edition. Byrd & Peckham 68 (listing this copy); Shaw and Shoemaker 44583; Streeter 1407.
