Lot Description
FAULKNER, William (1897-1962). These 13. New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, 1931.
8vo. Original brown cloth-backed linen, spine lettered in silver, top edge silver, others uncut (light to sunning to spine, light spotting to upper cover near top edge); folding cloth chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: Jean Hersholt (1886-1956), Danish-American actor (signed bookplate). Hersholt performed in a total of 140 films, including “Flesh,” a 1932 film co-written by an uncredited William Faulkner.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 39 of 299 copies, SIGNED BY FAULKNER. “It is likely that the limited issue precedes the trade issue” (Petersen). These 13 is a collection of stories, dedicated to his first daughter, Alabama, who had died nine days after her birth on 11 January 1931. It contains the first appearance of his story “A Rose for Emily.” Petersen A9.1.
