Lot Description
[TRAVEL & EXPLORATION]. PRIESTLEY, Raymond Edward, Sir (1886-1974). Antarctic Adventure: Scott's Northern Party. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1914.
8vo. 3 folding maps (very light occasional marginal spotting.) Original blue cloth stamped in silver (slight rubbing and sunning to spine as is common).
FIRST EDITION. Raymond Priestley's Antarctic Adventure is the sole complete account of Scott's Northern Party that was integrally conjoined to the Scott expedition. It was a party of six under Lt. Victor Campbell; Priestley was the only scientist. After a year at Cape Adare, the group was left at Evans Cove in Terra Nova Bay across McMurdo Sound from Cape Evans. They expected to be picked up six weeks later. But they ended up stranded having to survive a winter with virtually no provisions under dire, barely survivable conditions. They effected their own rescue the following spring season. A fire during the Great War at the publisher's warehouse during a Zeppelin attack destroyed many copies of the book, contributing to its scarcity. Conrad p.186; Meadows, 334; Renard 1254; Rosove 256.A1; Spence 939; Taurus 80.
