Lot Description

[TRAVEL & EXPLORATION]. EVANS, Edward (1880-1957). South With Scott. London: W. Collins Sons & Co., Ltd., 1921.

8vo. 3 folding plates (occasional marginal spotting throughout.) Original blue cloth (bubbling to covers as usual).

RARE FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE FIRST EDITION with "Copyright, 1921" and "Manufactured in Great Britain" on the title-leaf verso. Edward Evans served as second-in-command on Robert Falcon Scott's 1910-1913 Terra Nova expedition. Approximately 160 miles from the South Pole, he was ordered by Scott to return to the hut at Cape Evans along with petty officers William Lashly and Thomas Crean. During this return journey Evans almost lost his life to scurvy, and it was only through the heroic efforts of Lashly and Crean that he was saved, a feat which earned both petty officers the Albert Medal. In gratitude, Evans dedicated South with Scott to them. Renard 496; Rosove 117.A1; Spence 432; Taurus 83.
