Lot Description
[RACKHAM, Arthur (1867-1939), illustrator]. WAGNER, Richard (1813-1883). [The Ring of the Niblung]. The Rhinegold & the Valkyrie. -- Siegfried & the Twilight of the Gods. Margaret Armour, translator. London and New York: William Heinemann and Doubleday Page & Co., 1910, 1911.
2 volumes, 4to. Titles printed in gold and black, 64 total tipped-in color-printed plates by Rackham tipped to mounts, numerous illustrations. (Light toning to endpapers and limitation leaf.) Original vellum decorated and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, silk ties intact on Rhinegold volume, others laid in (light spotting to covers on Rhinegold volume).
FIRST EDITIONS, LIMITED ISSUE, numbers 757 and 452 of 1150 copies, BOTH SIGNED BY RACKHAM. These English translations of Wagner's first two operas in The Ring of the Niblung series contain some of Rackham's only illustrations for an adult audience. Latimore & Haskell, p.37-38; Riall pp.103, 109.
