Lot Description
[NATURAL HISTORY]. ROUSSEAU, JEAN-JACQUES. 1712-1778. La botanique. Paris: Baudouin Freres, 1822.
Large 4to (368 x 279 mm). Half-title, engraved title-page; 65 stipple-engraved plates printed in colors and finished by hand by Bouquet, Chailly, Delelo, etc., after PIERRE JOSEPH REDOUTE. (Spotting, marginal toning.) Contemporary straight-grain green morocco gilt, uncut (rebacked, preserving original spine, lower cover and spine detached, renewed endpapers).
THIRD EDITION. "This work is Redoute's last link with the ancien regime: his old patrons had all died, or like Cels, who died in 1806, had ceased to be influential. Redoute had entered easily into a new life under the Empire. On the whole, it can be said that it is remarkable how little Redoute was affected by the political and social changes that took place around him" (Stafleu). Dunthorne 252; Great Flower Books p. 74; Nissen BBI 1688; Stafleu TL2 9688.
