Lot Description

MAUGHAM, W. Somerset (1874-1965). Ashenden, or The British Agent. London: William Heinemann, 1936.

8vo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine; dust jacket, "4'6 net" price label over the "3s.6d.net" printed price (spine lightly faded, a few small closed tears with adhesive ghosting from old repairs verso). Provenance: Craig V. Showalter (bookplate).

MOVIE TIE-IN EDITION, published eight years after the first edition, but in tandem with the release of Alfred Hitchcock's SECRET AGENT, a 1936 Gaumont British film featuring British spies operating behind the lines in war-torn Europe. The movie was based on two of the Ashenden stories: "The Traitor" and "The Hairless Mexican." The dust jacket features a striking image of Madeleine Carroll as Elsa Carrington (Mrs. Ashenden), lurking with her pistol drawn.
