8vo. 8pp. publisher's ads at end. (Endpapers toned.) Original dark green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt; DUST JACKET with the design by William Horton (extremities toned, few tiny chips at spine ends); morocco-backed folding case. Publisher's catalogue laid in. Provenance: John Updike Rare Books (catalogue 16, item 164; copy laid in); sold to a private collector; Dagg Rare Books; acquired by the current owner, Craig V. Showalter (bookplate).
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S SECOND BOOK. IN THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE DUST JACKET. According to John Updike's catalogue note, several items in the collection retained their original dust jackets, some possibly unrecorded, and had "lain boxed since the turn of the century, the condition in many cases as published." Stott does not record this edition as having been issued in a dust jacket, nor could we trace any other copies with one. Stott A2b.
