Original oatmeal cloth decorated in red, black, and gilt, top edge stained yellow; DUST JACKET (extremities toned with some light chipping, spine darkened and strengthened on verso near joints); folding cloth chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: George D. Max (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with the top edge stained, printed on laid paper, and with the advertisements on p.235 reading "Gilbert Parker's Best Books." The Red Badge of Courage is "an extraordinary study of the common man amid the turmoil, clamor and distortion typified by war…its intensity, its startling yet inevitable descriptive phrase, struck a new note in American prose" (DAB). BAL 4071; Grolier American 98; Johnson High Spots 25; Stallman 3. A BRIGHT COPY IN THE RARE DUST JACKET.
