Lot Description

[FINE PRESS - GRABHORN PRESS]. WHITMAN, Walt (1819-1892). Leaves of Grass. New York: Random House, 1930.

Folio. Woodcut illustrations throughout by Valenti Angelo. (Offsetting to front free endpaper from bookplate.) Original reddish-brown morocco, mahogany boards, upper cover carved with Random House device, spine stamped in black (joints refurbished). Provenance: George Forman Goodyear (bookplate).

LIMITED EDITION, number 189 of 400 copies. Considered the magnum opus of the Grabhorn Press, Leaves of Grass was the largest undertaking to date for the Grabhorns. "It took over a year to print, and was partially set up many times before the printers achieved a satisfactory style. The tremendous impression necessary to print this book so strained the press that the printers suggested the colophon should read: '400 copies printed and the press destroyed'" (Heller & Magee 138).

This lot is located in Chicago.
