Lot Description
DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). A playing card game entitled, “Characters of Charles Dickens”. [London: Jacques & Son, ca 1880].
54 playing cards printed in red and black, with purple backs, wood-engraved vignettes (light toning); original slipcase (splits along edges, old repairs); lacking original pictorial board box.
A COMPLETE SET OF 54 PLAYING CARDS, comprising the rules of the game card and the "receive on counter from each player" card. The 54 cards consist of 13 groups of four characters from the works of Dickens. Of these 13 groups, ten feature an image and description of a character (Oliver Twist, Barnaby Rudge, Curiosity Shop [sic], Chuzzlewit, Pickwick, Dombey & Son, The Chimes, Cricket on the Hearth, The Haunted Man and Bleak House), and three feature text only (Little Dorrit, David Copperfield and The Christmas Books). RARE: OCLC records only two sets (Harvard and University of Chicago).
