3 volumes, 8vo (178 x 121 mm). Etched frontispiece to each volume and 21 plates after George Cruikshank. (A few plates lightly toned.) Modern red levant gilt, upper covers with a central gilt device depicting a bust of Dickens, the lower covers each with a facsimile autograph, spines in 6 compartments in 5 raised bands, gilt-lettering in 2, others completely gilt, all edges gilt, gilt stamp-signed by Baytun (Riviere); slipcase. Provenance: Sarah Schrosbury (early ownership signature dated 1839 on vol.1 title-page, and versos of frontispieces).

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ENGLISH NOVEL TO FEATURE A YOUNG CHILD AS A PROTAGONIST, second issue with "Boz" on the title-page but with the corrected "Church" plate. Eckel, pp.59-60; Gimbel A27; Smith I:4.
