DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. London: Chapman and Hall, April 1836 - November 1837.
20 parts in 19, 8vo. Engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette title-page, and 41 engraved plates by or after R. Seymour, R.W. Buss, and Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"). (Some marginal browning to plates.) Original printed green pictorial wrappers (part 1 upper cover detached, some chipping at spine ends, lower cover of last part with a small tear near foot); full morocco pull-off case.
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS OF DICKENS'S FIRST NOVEL. A mixed issue, with a balance of text in Hatton and Cleaver's first issue, but part 1, pp.25-26 is in the third issue; wrappers are later issues, omitting the illustrator's name from the front wrappers; plates are in various states; lacking ads in all volumes except parts 15, 18, and 19/20.
