Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 36-star American flag. Ca 1865-1867.
Approx. 49 by 70 in. wool flag with 36 double-appliquéd cotton stars machine sewn to a two-part wool canton, configured in a pattern comprised of horizontal rows 6/6/6/6/6/6. The field consists of 13 machine-sewn wool stripes. Hoist is cotton with two brass grommets, and includes inked notations and "4 x 6" stencil on reverse side. With gold-colored, silk fringe border sewn along three sides of the flag, which is a rare feature of the flag likely produced near the end or soon after the conclusion of the Civil War.
The 36-star flag became official after the admission of Nevada into the Union.
