Lot Description

[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. Group of 2 State of Massachusetts Bay items, comprising a 1780 Continental Army Commodity Bond and a 1779 "Pine Tree" emblem Treasury Loan Certificate.


6% Treasury Loan Certificate for £100 used to support officer's pay funding. "State of Massachusetts Bay." 20 July 1779. Printed from a Nathaniel Hurd plate on laid paper. Approx. 9 1/4 x 6 in. (creasing, toning, light wear). Bond features a vignette with a pine tree encircled by a rattlesnake at upper left. The left end margin indent engraving shows "MASSACHUSETTS" facing outward. In the right margin, "Advance Pay to Officers, second Moeity" in a cartouche. The bottom ribbon bears a stark warning to would-be counterfeiters, "Death To Counterfeit This." Signed by two committee members and "H. Gardner" as Treasurer (pen cancelled).

Continental Army Commodity Bond. "State of Massachusetts Bay." 1 January 1780. Issued to Continental Army soldiers to cover their depreciation of the pay that occurred during their time of service. Signed by "H. Gardner" as Treasurer (pen cancelled) and Cranch and Dawes as Committee. No. 951A for £2140 to pay unto Lieut. Charles Seldon.
