Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 12 "Grand Review" stereoviews by Alexander Gardner. [Washington, DC]: [1865].

12 stereoviews on yellow mounts, each with period ink inscription to verso reading, "The Grand Review," along with initials and image number to right edge. Most are taken from just above street level on Pennsylvania Avenue, showing men and horses parading toward the camera, with varying portions of the buildings to the left side of the street visible in each view. Two appear to be taken from a slightly different spot right along the parade route, a shorter distance from the oncoming procession.

The Grand Review was held over two days, 23-24 May 1865, in Washington, DC. This large-scale military parade celebrated the end of the Civil War, finally won by the Union. The Armies of the Potomac, Georgia and Tennessee were on display, showing a united front of power and patriotism for the nation, which was still mourning its fallen president.
