Lot Description
BARRY, David F. (1854-1934), photographer. Photograph of Sitting Bull and Major James McLaughlin at the dedication of the Standing Rock Reservation. North Dakota, ca 1880s.
10 1/8 x 8 1/4 in. silver gelatin print on 13 7/8 x 11 7/8 in. mount with "Barry" blindstamp to mount recto and image. Verso bears pencil inscriptions along upper edge identifying the subjects as Joe Premeau, Major James McLaughlin, and Sitting Bull; and a modern ink inscription reading "Sitting Bull speaking at Standing Rock."
Sitting Bull and Indian Agent James McLaughlin stand on either side of a stone structure, while Interpreter Joe Premeau stands to the far right. McLaughlin had a long relationship with Sitting Bull and the Hunkpapa Lakota, even accompanying Sitting Bull to Washington in 1888 before eventually ordering his arrest in 1890. That order would lead to a fatal shootout between the Indian Police and Sitting Bull's own followers, ending in the death of Sitting Bull, his son, and several others.
