MORROW, Stanley J. (1843-1921), photographer. 10 stereoviews of Mandan, Arikara, Sans Arc, and Brulé Sioux subjects.
10 views on variously-sized and colored mounts, with with S. J. Morrow's Yankton, Dakota Territory imprint to recto. Most from his "Photographic Gems of/from the Great North-West" series. Several include inscriptions to rectos and/or versos providing information about the images.
Includes: 4 individual portraits of female subjects (2 showing same subject) identified as the daughters of Sans Arc chiefs and an "Unca Pappa Squaw." -- Portrait of a chief dressed in full traditional garb and holding a long pipe with both hands, identified as "White-Bull Chief of Sans Arcs." -- Outdoor portrait of a group of 4 Native subjects dressed in full traditional garb including one man in a floor-length headdress. Identified as "Arikaree [sic] warriors, Ft. Berthold D.T." -- An outdoor portrait of a pair of standing male subjects, one with his torso and legs exposed and covered in painted lines. Identified by series image list printed on verso as "First and Second Chiefs of the Mandans, tattooed all over." -- An outdoor portrait of Spotted Tail and two females, likely his wife and daughter, wearing second phase Navajo blankets they must have acquired through trade. Verso inscription reads, "Spotted Tail, wife & Daughter. Chief of the Brule Sioux. Killed by Crow-Dog Aug 5 1881." -- And 2 others. -- Together, 10 views.
