Lot Description

MORROW, Stanley J. (1843-1921), photographer. "Signing Treaty of Peace July 11th 1870, Sisseton (Sioux) & the Arikarees, Gros Ventres, and Mandans, of Ft Berthold, D.T."

Stereoview on yellow mount with Morrow's imprint and "Photographic Gems from the Great Northwest" printed on recto, along with ink inscription (possibly in Morrow's hand) along lower margin reading "6 Signing Treaty of Peace July 11th 1870, Sisseton (Sioux) & the Arikarees Gros Ventres & Mandans, of Ft. Berthold D. T." Image shows a group of mostly Native American men seated in wooden chairs arranged in a circle, with a log-built structure in the background.

Having learned the art of photography from Mathew Brady, S. J. Morrow moved out west where he opened a studio in Yankton, Dakota Territory. His first trip up the Missouri occurred soon after his arrival in Yankton in 1869, and little is known about his itinerary or how far upriver he progressed. In 1870, he again traveled up the Missouri, and this image documents that he was at Fort Berthold in July, which is when most of his early portraits there appear to have been made. The building in the background is one of the trader's stores with a fortified gate, but not Fort Berthold itself.

Provenance: Cowan's, Western & Historic Americana, 6 December 2007, Lot 157.
