Lot Description

[INDIAN WARS]. A collection of CDVs of 6th Iowa Cavalrymen who were involved in General Alfred Sully's Expedition against the Sioux, ca 1863-1865.


31 CDVs, including more than 20 views of officers and enlistedmen who served with the 6th Iowa Cavalry. Seven cartes de visite with verso imprint of C.L. Hamilton, Fort Randall, D.T., and one with verso imprint of C.F. Putney, Independence, Iowa.

Together, 31 CDVs.

Organized at Davenport, Iowa, from January to March, 1863, the 6th Iowa Cavalry moved to Sioux City, Dakota between March and April. The regiment was involved in operations against the Sioux near Fort Randall in May and June, 1863. Following duty at Fort Pierre, the regiment aided in Sully's Expedition against hostile Sioux Indians from August-September, 1863. Over the following year, the 6th Iowa saw action at Stone Hill, served duty at Fort Sully, Fort Randall, and Sioux City, then again participated in Sully's Expedition against the hostile Sioux from June to October, 1864. Additional actions included an expedition from Fort Rice, Dakota Territory, to relieve Captain Fisk’s emigrant train under siege while traveling to Idaho Territory in September, 1864. Following duty at Fort Randall, Fort Berthold, and the Sioux and Winnebago Indian Agencies, the 6th Iowa mustered out in October, 1865.
