Lot Description
CDV of Pawnee chiefs with Julius Meyer, US interpreter and trader. Ca 1870s.
CDV on cardstock mount with inscription in lower margin, "Julius Meyer & Pawnee Chiefs," uncredited but originally published by Frank F. Currier, Omaha, Nebraska. Mount verso with partially visible imprint of the "Indian Wigwam," the curio shop operated by Julius Meyer in Omaha, Nebraska. A "Culver Service" ink stamp is also included on verso.
Born in Bromberg, Prussia in 1839, Julius Meyer emigrated to Nebraska in 1867, and began making acquaintances with Plains Indians. He reportedly learned to speak six Indian languages. He served as an interpreter with George Crook, and later opened a curio shop called The Indian Wigwam, which was located at 163 Farnam St. in Omaha. Meyer was apparently not shy about having his photograph taken; a number of images are known of him with Native American subjects. Here he poses with four Pawnee men and two young boys, the Indians with pipes and pipe tomahawks and wearing fine beaded leggings.
