The 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was mustered in for 3 years' service on 25 May 1861. The regiment most notably saw action at Winchester, Cedar Mountain, and Antietam in 1862, and Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in 1863, among other engagements large and small. The regiment also took part in aiding the suppression of draft riots taking place in New York City in the late summer of 1863.
