[CIVIL WAR]. 6 portraits of Medal of Honor recipients, incl. Generals Absalom BAIRD, Abraham K. ARNOLD, Charles P. MATTOCKS, and David S. STANLEY.

Large format mounted albumen portrait (likely disbound from a yearbook or other bound volume) of General Abraham Kerns ARNOLD in uniform. Uncredited, n.d. Arnold was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on 10/5/1864 during the Battle of Davenport Bridge, where he led his regiment in a cavalry charge against superior Confederate forces to rescue men under his command, preventing their capture. -- CDV seated half portrait of General Absalom BAIRD in uniform, sporting his characteristically long mustache. Louisville, KY: Webster & Bro., n.d. 2-cent revenue stamp affixed on verso along with Webster & Bro. ink stamp. Baird was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of Jonesborough, where he led a brigade charge in an assault on Confederate works. -- CDV full standing portrait of General Charles P. Mattocks was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for actions on 4/6/1865 during the Battle of Sailor's Creek, where he led a regimental charge, capturing numerous prisoners, artillery pieces, and enemy colors. -- CDV full standing portrait of General David Sloane STANLEY in uniform. Stanley was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on 11/30/1864 during the Battle of Franklin where he rode to the front of one of his brigades during a critical moment in battle, reestablished its lines, and led it in a successful counterassault against the enemy. -- CDV seated portrait of Oliver Otis HOWARD in civilian clothing. Boston: T. R. Burnham, n.d. Howard was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions leading a brigade at the Battle of Fair Oaks, during which he suffered two wounds and consequently lost his right arm. -- CDV seated portrait of First Lieutenant Francis E. BROWNELL in full uniform, holding his sword across his lap with one hand and sporting multiple badges and medals. Albany, NY: D. Woodworth, n.d. Brownell was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions as a member of the 11th New York Volunteers on 5/24/1861, when he avenged the death of his colonel, Elmer Ellsworth, by fatally shooting and bayonetting innkeeper James Jackson, who had just shot Ellsworth at the Marshall House. -- Together, 5 images.
