Lot Description

CDV of Capt. John S. Cady, 8th Minnesota Regiment, killed by Sioux warriors. Anoka, MN: Wm. H. Cook's Gallery, 1863.


CDV on cardstock mount with verso imprint of Wm. H. Cook's Gallery, Anoka, MN. Mount with printed caption in lower margin, "Capt. John S. Cady, Co. A, 8th Reg't., Min. Vol's. / Killed near Lake Kandihoyi, Minn., by Sioux Indians, June 11th, 1863."

John S. Cady was a resident of Anoka, MN, when he enlisted at the age of 26 as a captain and was commissioned into Co. A, 8th Minnesota Infantry in August 1862. The 8th Minnesota was formed in the summer of 1862, and as a result of the US – Dakota War of 1862, Cady and his fellow soldiers spent most of their first two years of service occupying posts around the state. Within less than one year after enlisting, Cady was killed during a skirmish with Sioux Indians on 11 June 1863 at Kandiyohi Lakes, Minnesota.
