Lot Description

Hand-colored photograph of Wagasapa or Iron Whip, Head Chief of the Poncas, Dakota Territory.

16 1/2 x 13 5/8 in. photograph, possibly a salt print, on 19 x 13 1/2 in. cardstock mount with manuscript notation in lower margin, "Wa-gah-sup-pe (The Iron Whip) Head Chief of the Poncas. Dakota Territory." Photographer unknown.

A beautifully hand-colored large format photograph of Iron Whip standing in a studio setting, posed with a tomahawk. He wears a buffalo horn headdress, a trade blanket, which is draped on one shoulder, and a grizzly bear-claw necklace and peace medal. He also sports beaded hide leggings and moccasins.

A compelling studio portrait of a Ponca chief.
