Lot Description

[WESTERN AMERICANA]. Early cattlemen badges from Kansas City and St. Louis.

Three-tiered souvenir badge featuring longhorns below which hangs a plaque "St. Louis, Nov, 1885" and a round disc "Souvenir / 1885" encircling relief images of a head of cattle and a horse head. Approx. 4 x 3 1/2 in. (oxidation, lacking pin).

Tiered souvenir badge with decorative bar (pin intact) and circular hanger with enameled image of a head of cattle and "Kansas City Stock Yards / October 1900." Back mark of Whitehead & Hoag Co., Newark, New Jersey. Approx. 3 x 2 1/4 in. (oxidation, white residue on verso, wear).

Though less associated today with cattle than their Texas counterparts, Kansas City and St. Louis also have strong histories of association with the cattle industry. In 1900, the Kansas City Stockyards in particular were at their peak, a bustling industrial center that helped drive the city's economic growth. By the turn of the century, the stockyards were a massive complex covering over 200 acres and accommodating hundreds of thousands of animals daily.
