Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Two 22K gold, Tiffany & Co. service medals presented to George Moore Smith, 7th New York State Militia.
Two 22K gold service medals made by Tiffany & Co, each signed "Tiffany & Co." and patented "Mar. 3 1885" on reverse. Both are presented to George Moore Smith for his service with the 7th New York State Militia.
Includes: 1 3/4 in. medal, obverse with diamond encrusted "7" at center surrounded by inscription, "Long and Faithful Service," on a large cross framed by an open-ended wreath of oak leaves, backed by crossed cannons. Reverse inscribed, "Presented to Lieut. Col. George Moore Smith by the Officers of the Seventh Regiment, NGSNY March 21st 1887." Approx. 2 1/4 x 1 3/4 in. overall. Lacking red ribbon, but accompanied by pinback hanger inscribed "Pro Patria Et Gloria." Weight of medal, not including the bar, 58.7 grams or 2.07 ounces; weight including the bar, 67.8 grams or 2.39 ounces. Please note that the diamonds have not been tested.
2 1/4 x 1 3/4 in. medal, obverse with "7" at center surrounded by inscription, "Long and Faithful Service," on a large cross framed by an open-ended wreath of oak leaves, backed by crossed cannons. Reverse inscribed, "Presented to Lt. Col. George Moore Smith, 1885, by Col. Clark, Capt. Appleton, Capt. Rhoads, Adjt. Rand, QM Long, and Lieut. Dewon." Original red ribbon with pinback hanger inscribed "Pro Patria Et Gloria." Weight of medal including the ribbon and bar, 71.6 grams or 2.525 ounces.
