Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. MARKEY, D.A., photographer. Cabinet card of Alchesay, Apache War Chief and MOH recipient. Fort Grant, AZ, ca 1890s.

Cabinet photograph on cardstock mount with studio imprint on recto and verso of D.A. Markey, Fort Grant, Arizona. The subject, who is shown seated with a rifle in hand, is identified in the negative and on verso as, "Al-Che-Say, Apache War Chief." Verso includes handwritten date of 1894 and negative number, "70."

Alchesay (1853-1928) was a US Army Indian Scout under General Crook with rank of sergeant. He received a Medal of Honor in 1875 from the US government for his gallant conduct during the winter of 1872-1873 when he acted as envoy from Crook to Geronimo to attempt a peaceful surrender. In 1883, Alchesay served with Crook against Geronimo again, and in 1885 pursued him into Mexico. Geronimo finally surrendered in 1886, but still remained friends with Alchesay for the rest of his life.
