Lot Description

[NATIVE AMERICANS]. [FLY, C.S., photographer, attrib.]. Cabinet card of Apache scouts. Ca 1870s.

4 3/8 x 3 7/8 in. photograph on cabinet card-sized mount. Verso bears red ink inscription reading, "Apache Indians on gov employ as scouts at time this photo was taken, at other times on the war path." Pencil inscription below credits the image to C.S. Fly.

Pictured are 3 Apache subjects, with long hair but dressed in western-style shirts, vests, and neckerchiefs. Each is doubly armed, with the subject on the viewer's left holding a single shot breech loading shotgun and a large knife, the middle subject holding a trapdoor carbine and having a Colt single action Army revolver tucked into his cartridge belt, and the subject on the viewer's right holding a trapdoor carbine and a knife. All wear moccasins or boot moccasins on their feet.
