Lot Description
[POLITICS]. STOUGHTON, Cecil (1920-2008), photographer. Photograph of Lyndon B. Johnson's swearing-in aboard Air Force One.
9 3/8 x 7 1/4 in. silver gelatin photograph on 14 x 11 in. cardstock mount. Verso with "Cecil Stoughton / The White House" ink stamp covered with applied modern tape. Undated print.
This iconic image of Lyndon B. Johnson being sworn in aboard Air Force One, with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy at his side, was taken just hours after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. The hand of Press Secretary Malcolm Kilduff can be seen holding a dictaphone toward Johnson in an effort to record the event. Also present (and at least partially visible in the image) are: Judge Sarah T. Hughes, Jack Valenti, Albert Thomas, Marie Fehmer, Lady Bird Johnson, Chief Curry, Evelyn Lincoln, Homer Thornberry, Roy Kellerman, Lem Johns, Pamela Tunure, Jack Brooks, and Bill Moyers.
