Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. The Class of 1865 Harvard College. Cambridge, MA. Yearbook containing albumen photographs of grounds, faculty, and students who later served in the Civil War.

4to (10 3/4 x 13 1/2 in). Approx. 113 mounted albumen photographs. Original morocco, (significant scuffing, wear to extremities, interior spine mostly detached from exterior). Modern manuscript list identifies several of the subjects who served during the Civil War, including: George Albert Fisher, 1st Lieutenant, 5th MA Cavalry; Sumner Paine, 2nd Lieutenant, 20th MA Infantry, KIA at Gettysburg; Patrick Tracy Jackson, 1st Lieutenant, 5th MA Cavalry; Robert Ralston Newell, 1st Lieutenant, 54th MA Infantry; and many more.

Album contains 15 outdoor photographs of ground and university buildings, approx. 20 portraits of faculty, and approx. 78 portraits of classmates. Last names of most subjects are penciled lightly to lower right corners of pages.

Faculty members include some prominent scholars and educators including historian and regent of the Smithsonian Institution Cornelius Conway Felton (1807 – 1862), preacher and author Andrew Preston Peabody (1811 – 1893), biologist Louis Agassiz (1807-1873), poet James Russell Lowell (1819 – 1891), philosopher Francis Bowen (1811-1890), modern Greek scholar Evangelinos Apostolides Sophocles (1807-1883), and past University president and American politician Edward Everett (1794-1865).
