Lot Description
[ENSLAVEMENT]. Ship's manifest documenting the conveyance of one enslaved person named John. March 1844.
Partly printed ship's "Manifest of Slaves" documenting the conveyance of John, a 26-year-old enslaved man from Port Pontchartrain, District of Mississippi, to Mobile, Alabama. 23 March 1844. One page, printed recto/verso, 12 1/2 x 8 in.
"Manifest of Slaves, on board the Steamer Creole of N Orleans burden [blank] tons, whereof R A Hurn is at present Master, bound from the Port of Pontchartrain for the Port of Mobile." John is the only person listed, with his enslaver's name "P Bailey" provided under the "Shippers or Owners" column.
Document verso includes signed oath of slave owner, P Bailey, and master of the steamer Creole, R A Hirn, swearing that John was "not imported into the United States since the first day of January, 1808, and that under the laws of the State they are held to service and labor." Also signed by the port's Surveyor and Inspector S. H. Page, certifying the manifest and the oath made by Hirn and Bailey above.
