Lot Description

JACKSON, William Henry (1843-1942).  A group of 17 photographs of the American West.
(American, 1843–1942)


17 unmounted photographs ranging in size from 4 x 6 7/8 in. to 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 in., each housed in an archival mat. Some prints are titled in the negative, and all are inscribed in pencil on verso, purportedly in the hand of William Henry Holmes (1846-1933) who was Chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Several inscriptions credit Jackson with dates ranging from 1868-1874.

Scenes include: Mammoth Hot Springs. -- Echo Canyon. -- Mango Canyon Looking Down from Near its Mouth. -- Garden of the Gods, Glen Eyrie. -- Echo Canyon, Utah. -- Yellowstone Lake - Outlet. -- Salt Lake City. -- The Teton Range, South (2). -- Hot Springs between the Fire Hole Basins. -- Bute of Volcanic Ash, Henry's Fork. -- Long's Peak, Colorado, with "W.H. Holmes" written below inscription. -- Mystic Lake, MT. -- Castle Geyser. -- Green River Buttes. -- Uncompahgre Range. -- Bad Lands on Blackfork.
