Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Half plate tintype of a Northern Pacific steam locomotive.
Half plate tintype featuring locomotive with diamond stack and "128[?] Northern Pacific" emblazoned on the side of the tender. Three men pose standing on the tracks below and one man stands up on a ledge to the side of the boiler.
A 0-4-0 according to Whyte's classification method, this locomotive features no leading wheels, four drive wheels, and no trailing wheels. This is one of the simplest types of locomotives, having just two axles and four coupled wheels, all of which are driven.
Chartered in 1864, the Northern Pacific Railway operated from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest. With construction beginning in 1870, the main line, running from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean, was opened in 1883 by the time Ulysses S. Grant drove in the famed "golden spike."
Image housed in a scarce figural Union case, Washington Monument with Seraphs and Eagles [Berg 1-35].
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
