Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. CORNELIUS, Robert, photographer. Sixth plate daguerreotype of an aged gentleman identified as William Jenkins. Philadelphia, ca 1843. [With:] Jenkins family photograph and documentation.
Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of an elderly man with white hair, holding his hands clasped in front of his torso. Mat stamped "R. Cornelius / Philada."
Housed in a full leatherette case (surface wear to covers, light discoloration and wear to satin pad).
Image accompanied by a scrap of paper with ink inscriptions to both sides, erroneously identifying the image as an "Ambrotype of Wm Jenkins" on one side, and explaining the circumstances thusly on the other: "Taken in Philadelphia the day before your Father & Mother were married - the old gentleman came on to the wedding & yr Father after great persuasion made him have it taken."
[With:] 7 typewritten pages of genealogy information about the Kennedy, Martin, and Jenkins families (largely) of Philadelphia and Baltimore. -- And 6 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. albumen portrait of an unknown man, with "D[?] Anderson" blindstamp to lower left, on 10 x 12 in. mount with fully detached mat. -- Together, 2 items, both of which were acquired with the daguerreotype, according to the consignor.
