Northern Plains Painted Miniature Shield
fourth quarter 19th century
hide painted in green and blue and surrounded by a singular outer lane beaded in rose, dark blue, light blue, and pink; a greasy yellow crescent is situated within the upper half of the lane; twisted blue fringe; notation on verso:
Small shields of this type were frequently a part of a man's sacred war bundles. They were also (occasionally) miniature replicas of full-size shields. The larger examples were danced before war raids or horse-stealing expeditions, and the smaller versions carried into battle as a talisman or charm.
