Lot Description

Apache Painted Hide Bag
third quarter 19th century

sinew-sewn, softly tanned hide; painted on both sides in red and black; fringe with pinked edges is further decorated with geometric elements; front of bag painted with zigzagging bands and checkered panels; opposite design replicates front with the addition of a figure, having hands outstretched and wearing fringed or feathered clothing; drawstring closure

overall length 16-1/2 inches x width 10-1/2 inches

Collected by Hugh Sparks (1874–1951), who served in the Spanish-American War and later as First Lieutenant in the 31st Infantry, based in Kentucky. Sparks spent time in the White Mountain Apache Reservation area, where he is believed to have acquired this piece.
